| My name is Patricia Mills, President of the Eagle's Nest Education Foundation. We are a non-profit educational foundation. We present Native American living history demonstrations, displays, and other media events to educate children (schools, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.) and others in the public arena, such as military, government, and health care personnel. Requests for our services continue to increase. I opened Eagles Nest Trading Post in Stafford in 2004, where it has been my goal to teach others about Native American history and culture. I am an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nations Tribe in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and my family was forced to walk the Trail of Tears back in the 1830s. I have a group of people who tirelessly help me with a variety of public events and outreach programs. Teaching the public about our culture, especially children, is the goal of our Foundation. You would be shocked to hear children say that they are not aware that American Indians are still alive. Even adults often say they know little or nothing about Native American culture. It is so sad! When you see those little faces light up with excitement when they learn about us, it is so rewarding! It really tugs at the heart. It is also rewarding to work with adults, especially those who are discovering their Native American roots. However, I continue to focus on the vital public services that we perform. |
